Georgia : Blake Chappell

My case this week is an unsolved murder. It takes place in a few different greater Atlanta suburbs: Senoia, Jonesboro, and Newnan. These three are all within a 75-mile radius. The majority of these cases happen in Newnan, so let me tell you a little bit about this city inside Coweta County. Newnan is 40 miles southwest of Atlanta with a population of around 42,000 with a crime rate more than 3 times higher than the state average. The chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime is 1 in 80 in Newnan and 1 in 250 in all of Georgia. Newnan hosted one of the most talked about trials in 1948; the trial of John Wallace. He was the first white man to be condemned to death by the testimony of African Americans. A book and movie that starred Johnny Cash and June Carter were made about this trial titled Murder in Coweta County. Two field workers were forced to burn the body of a white sharecropper named Wilson Turner and testified against their boss. More recently, Newnan was hit by an EF4 tornado that was the strongest on record in Georgia since 1950.

I had the opportunity to speak with case advocate LaChanda over the phone about Blake’s story.  This is that interview.
